Another favorite charcoal of mine. Why? I am not sure. Is it that he is my morning company as I prepare to the enter the studio or is it the wonderful darks and lights or maybe it is the strong verticals contrasted against the curves of the bust? I am not sure, but everytime I look at this piece I want to rush out with my charcoal stick and sketch pad and just draw the first thing that I see. The location of this bust is in the courtyard of the Dr Sun Yat Sen gardens in China Town, Vancouver. In the background is the suggestion of the downtown Vancouver Condo’s which contrast beautifully with the traditions captured in the courtyard. As yet no painting has emerged from this piece but I can sense a narrow monochrome arriving.
