So much happens within the frame of this painting. I love the location (by the entrance to Granville Island) and I love the subject but to capture the scene is intense. There are thousands of little elements: the ropes, the masts, the sails, the layers upon layers of boats, the water, the city, the bridge. One approach would be to carefully draw in all of the elements and to then “color” in, however this is not how I approach painting. As with all my works, I tackled the subject immediately and spent the following days removing and adding element upon element until there was a sense of the business of the scene and not simply a depiction.
