1906 West. Oil on canvas. 24″ x 24″

Painting by local Vancouver artist Leanne Christie based on archived photo of vancouver circa 1906

What: The view of downtown Vancouver looking West in 1906

Growing pains – the board of trade decided that the design issues in the new Post Office which included extremely narrow doors, would not be corrected as construction was too advanced.  They did decide to lower the post box as it was too high for one to reach without a step ladder.

Current Use: A thriving downtown filled with highrises.

Court Cases heard: Rex v Hughes. 24 October 1906

Hughes had been convicted of selling alcohol to an Indian and was appealing the conviction as the person in question was a “quarter-breed”.  The courts found in his favor as Hughes would have had no way of knowing if Jack Nelson followed an Indian way of life or belonged to a band.
