The January Studio Month
As you know, every January I close the studio and put my phone on silent so that I can take the time needed to wander without pressure or expectations, through the world of ideas and painting. This month initially focused on a single painting and exploring my paint by allowing it to move in ways it does not when it knows that there is some expectation of a final painting to be produced within a certain time frame.
In 2014, the single painting gave way to the idea of exploring a project. Still working with a single painting but instead of just developing the paint through taking on the challenge of a large painting, I also tried to understand communicating the story through many different layers. 2014 was the year that video became a medium that I began to educate myself on and the first time that I put together some semblance of a story on my website.
2015 has taken this idea further while still playing within the parameters that were lain down in 2014. You may ask yourself why I did not redefine the parameters as I so often try to do in January and the answer is simple. Video and communicating a story through a website, take time to understand and use effectively and I have as yet to fully understood them but in 2015 the story was better told with richer layers.
The Société de Francophone de Maillardville offered me the opportunity to be their visual artist for their annual Francophone music festival – the Festival du Bois. Preparations for the solo exhibition began in 2014 but my intention was always to use my January studio month to bring to fruition the successful layering of the tale which underlies the large paintings which form the centre piece of the exhibition. The large paintings from the now titled “Théâtre de la vie Publique” were only possible as a result of the confidence which was developed during the 2014 January Studio month.
I am thrilled with the fruits of the January studio month and feel confident that they will point the compass in the right direction through what I hope will be a busy year.
